Dr. Robin Rose on Nonviolence

Rev. David Shelor, club president, welcomed Dr. Robin Rose, a member of his congregation, to speak about nonviolence and her experiences with Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mohandas Gandhi. Dr. Rose shared her background in the nonprofit industry, her education, and her association with Rotary. She expressed her joy in being part of a club committed to peace.

Achieving Global Peace Through Inner Reflection

Robin discussed the importance of inner peace and self-reflection in achieving global peace. She emphasized that peace is an inside job, starting with each individual and that our thoughts, emotions, and feelings, which lie beneath the surface, influence our actions and interactions with others. Robin also highlighted the need to challenge and change the way we think and the messages we pass down to future generations, as these can contribute to violence and prejudice in the world.

Robin's Insights on Peace and Nonviolence

Robin discussed the importance of introspection and self-reflection in achieving peace and nonviolence. She shared a personal story about Arun Gandhi, who was sent to live with Mahatma Gandhi to learn about nonviolence. Robin emphasized the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and to integrate core values such as nonjudgment, community, harmony, truth, fairness, love, and forgiveness to promote peace. She also highlighted the significance of daily introspection and action in changing oneself and, ultimately, the world. Robin shared her experience as a nonprofit CEO, using harmonious methods of conflict resolution, which led to a more respectful and peaceful workplace.

Nonviolent Conflict Resolution in the Workplace

Robin discussed her experiences with Arun, a peace and nonviolence advocate, and the lessons she learned from him. Robin emphasized the importance of using nonviolent language and conflict resolution in the workplace and the need for accountability. She also shared how they took their problems to the "peace table" and how they resolved differences respectfully. Robin clarified that self-defense is not against the principles of nonviolence but should be used as a last resort after all other avenues have been exhausted. She also mentioned that the United Nations acknowledges nonviolent work annually.
