Literacy Committee– Chairperson – Pat Bauer
Literacy Committee
The Literacy Committee offers these objectives to continue literacy programs that have been consistently supported by the Rotary Club of Dunedin over the past several years.
Note: Projects marked with ** emphasize direct community involvement, contributing time to build relationships and share talents.
Committee Objectives:
-
Distribute gift books signed by our guest speakers to elementary schools in Dunedin. This program provides an important connection to our elementary schools and opens the door for other Rotary literacy projects in the schools.
-
Participate in drives to collect and donate school supplies to Dunedin elementary schools.
-
Maintain a partnership to support a literacy program for adults at Dunedin Elementary School. This partnership with the Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas makes it possible for mothers of children who speak English as a second language to attend an English class in their child's school. Classes are held weekly at Dunedin Elementary. Teaching materials are provided by the Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas.
-
Stock Little Free Libraries at Dunedin Elementary School and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center in collaboration with the Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas. We ensure that these libraries are stocked with books to enrich the lives of students and parents.
-
Replace Little Free Libraries at elementary schools in the Dunedin area. Completed in 2025.
-
Continue support of the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP), one of the largest grassroots, multi-club, multi-district projects in Rotary. Over 600 clubs and 80 districts have worked together since 1997 to improve education for underserved students in Guatemala.
