For more than 40 years, Dr. James “Buddy” Powell has worked to conserve manatees and other endangered species worldwide through science and education. His integrated approach to unlocking solutions for conservation issues has resulted in coastal protected areas in Florida, West Africa, Central America, and Cuba.
We must admit that some of our members were unaware of the number of different species of manatees. The good news we discovered was that as the research improves, so do the counts of the number of manatees.
One issue Dr. Powell discussed was that the grasses the manatees eat are disappearing. Historically, areas on the bottom of rivers covered in grasses are now mud. The grasses are gone. Research and efforts are underway to restore these grasses.
