Conversation Agreements

"How to Have a Real Conversation, Even When They're an Idiot. (They Probably Think the Same of You.)"

In our divisive political climate, fueled by social media, podcasts, YouTube, and 24-hour news, we seem to be losing our ability to even have a simple conversation with people with whom we disagree, much less talk about anything meaningful and significant. True to Rotary's norms, we did not talk politics, but President Shelor talked about HOW we talk about politics and other things we care about.

Conversation Topics Covered

  1. Be curious and open to learning.

  2. Show respect and suspend judgment.

  3. Note any common ground as well as any differences.

  4. Be authentic and welcome that from others.

  5. Own and guide the conversation.

Hopefully, the meeting participants learn to do a better job of it.
